FRISCO, TEXAS – There is a new defensive backs coach in Dallas and he is already making his mark to change the structure of the Cowboys’ defense. Kris Richard has changed Cowboys veteran Byron Jones from safety to cornerback.
When asked about his change at the Skills Challenge earlier in the week, Jones remarked “ As soon as coach Richard came in he was talking how he wanted to move me to corner. We had a discussion and made the move. I am a longer corner; I’ve got speed and athleticism. I think he could use me on the outside.”
The Cowboys went through a transitional period in the 2017 season with their young secondary: Jourdan Lewis, Xavier Woods, Kavon Frazier, and Chidobe Awuzie. These guys battled hamstring issues while learning the ropes of adjusting to the NFL. Once they became healthy, they made a huge difference on the field in the outcome of the wins against the Redskins, Giants, and Raiders late in the season. The Cowboys are looking for better depth at the defensive back positions in the draft, and coach Richard is already making needed changes by moving Jones to CB.
Jones commented, “ I am always open to position changes. As long as I am in the best position to succeed and if he believes that is the best position for me to succeed, then I’m down. “
