FRISCO, TEXAS – The three-day event of the 2018 NFL Draft concluded at the Star in Frisco as Owner and General Manager, Jerry Jones, Executive Vice President and CEO, Stephen Jones, and Head Coach Jason Garrett gave an analysis of rounds 4-7 of the Draft in their thoughts from the War Room.
Stephen Jones stated that in the draft their main focus was “ Creating depth and competition at all levels. Getting players who have the up-side to develop and help us win football games,” and they believe they did exactly that Thursday through Saturday.
The major point of discussion was the trade surrounding wide receiver Tavon Austin from the Rams. The Rams sent Austin to Dallas for a sixth-round pick. Stephen Jones explained “ we had a great meeting with Scott and Jason about what he could do for us. He is a weapon. St. Louis has struggled in terms of how to utilize him. “ Then he addressed his role for the silver and blue “he is web-back that is supersized in his explosiveness. We intend to use him as we have used Dunbar in the past.”
The Dallas Cowboys will give Austin the ball in various ways to create an impact in their offensive scheme. They met another need for a role in their defensive line, and they made the trade. The Cowboys made a deal with the Oakland Raiders, trading wide receiver and punt returner Ryan Switzer for defensive tackle Jihad Ward. Stephen Jones commented that Ward was a “guy we coached in the Senior Bowl and we had a very high grade of him coming into the draft. He fell into a place of need for us in terms of the interior defensive line.”
The Dallas Cowboys are mending the gaps in the offense by creating competiveness within the receivers to be successful and establish a Dak-friendly environment on the field, as well as pressure players on defense to strengthen the Cowboys’ pass rush ability across the line of scrimmage.
