Empowering Leaders

FRISCO, TEXAS – Head Coach Jason Garrett spoke with the media from the Cowboys Golf Classic addressing the rookie minicamp that will take place later this week at the Star in Frisco.

Garrett discussed the new approach they are taking going into minicamp this week and training camp in July “ we will teach them a lot of football…get them integrated to the strength and conditioning program. Do a better job laying a physical foundation for what we will ask them to do going forward, instead of going full speed right away. A lot of football on the field but at a slower pace.”

With many of the team’s veteran leaders gone including tight end, Jason Witten and wide receiver, Dez Bryant, young rookies will have a chance to compete and grow as individual players on the team as they gain experience on the field.

Garrett commented, “Guys have an opportunity. A lot of ways can help them grow. They aren’t standing and watching; they are in the fire and I think that will help them develop. “

He has stressed that competition will bring out the best in his players. A lot of starting positions are up for grabs as veterans have left and many young athletes are making Dallas their new home. The young players will fight to earn the star and create a place for themselves in the Cowboys’ scheme.

The Cowboys will continue to empower the veterans that continue to make a difference on and off the field. They will have to step up and lead these young players into a smooth transition. Each veteran was once a rookie starting in the NFL fighting for a starting position, and knows what it feels like to be in their shoes and the drive and commitment it takes to reach the goal. Players like “Sean Lee, Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick, and Tyrone Crawford are really good football players and absolute kinda guys. They are great leaders of our team and have…. led by example and been a beacon to those around them by their example. “ Along with Dak and Zeke who had incredible rookie seasons and showed immense leadership abilities as they led the Cowboys to a 13-3 season. The Cowboys are starting fresh and optimistic of the future and building of the team this season with its impact veterans and enthused young rookies.
