FRISCO, Texas – The Cowboys’ offensive line has been in discussion for quite some time as Zack Martin’s contract was under negotiation. At the conclusion of Mandatory Mini-Camp, the focus shifted to the quarterback and his receivers. Last season, the Cowboys had to rely on the running game because there was zero chemistry between quarterback Dak Prescott and his receivers. Dak could not get into a rhythm of connecting with Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams, or Cole Beasley on the field as he had the previous season that ended with a 13-3 record. Once the time for free agency arrived, and the Draft began, the offensive issues became the Cowboys main focus.
At the press conference concluding Mini-Camp at the Star, head coach Jason Garrett stressed what will make a difference on the field come fall for his team.
“The time quarterbacks spend with receivers alone on a practice field by themselves, that is the stuff that translates more than anything else…. putting the time and work in. Developing these bonds that will be with you the rest of your life. I just think that is critical. That stuff shows up on Sundays.”
Garrett reflected on the time he spent with Michael Irvin, along with Troy Aikman and other quarterbacks, on the practice field going over routes. Those moments are crucial in developing chemistry, enhancing skills, and putting in the work when coaches are not around. Dak Prescott is putting in the time with the young receivers, and it is going to pay off. Every moment they spend together going over plays and perfecting routes in the Cowboys offensive scheme, is valuable time that will translate on the field when the season begins.
Former Cowboys wide receiver “playmaker” Michael Irvin attended practice at Mandatory Mini-Camp and discussed Dak’s quarterback style and how the new additions of receivers to the roster will help benefit Dak’s playing style, as they fit into his mold of doing things.
“I see Dak in the form of what Tom Brady does. He has great legs. Tom Brady plays the game inside out. Dak plays inside out. Now we have primary inside receivers so the game will fit his game better. Now it is up to him and the guys to take it to another level.”
The young receivers the Cowboys have acquired are your ‘X’ style receivers or ‘split end’ receivers, who are at the line of scrimmage and face cornerbacks once the play begins. They have the speed to beat cornerbacks out of a jam and get down the sideline. These receivers will fit in with Dak’s style of playing inside out. Irvin spent time with the receivers during camp, teaching them to have confidence coming off the line against cornerbacks and the control that is in their grasp by knowing the play.
The Cowboys have re-structured the offense to create a “Dak-friendly” environment for their quarterback with gifted receivers suited to his play style. The Cowboys are excited and hopeful to see the fruition of their decision come to life on the gridiron in Oxnard California!
