DALLAS, Texas — SMU had an impressive 6-2 start in 2017 with thrilling victories over Cincinnati and Tulsa before stumbling down the stretch, losing three of the final four games of the season. The Mustangs earned a bowl bid for the first time since 2012.
Quarterback Ben Hicks is coming off a career-best season, finishing third in the conference in passing after throwing for 3,569 yards and 33 touchdowns. He owns the SMU record for career touchdowns (55) and is second in career passing yards (6,499). There’s potential for bigger and better things from Hicks if he can fully embrace new coach Sonny Dykes’ Air Raid offense. It’s a system predicated on throwing the football.
