OXNARD, Calif. – After the failed passing game last season, the Cowboys added depth at the wide receiver position. There is a fight for a starting position between Cole Beasley, Allen Hurns, Michael Gallup, Lance Lenoir, Deonte Thompson, and Terrance Williams. Michael Gallup continues to impress the coaching staff with his fluid routes and good hands.
At Colorado State, he earned ALL Mountain West Conference awards by catching 76 passes for a conference high 1,272 yards and four touchdowns. He is tremendous on man-to-man press coverage down the sideline against cornerbacks, and has strong arms and hands to high point the football. The Cowboys have seen Gallup’s ability at camp with his fluid routes and catches at practice on slants or down the sideline, and his ability to hold his own paired against cornerback Byron Jones. Gallup continues to show his attention to detail and competitiveness after the catch to gain yards.
He is making a case for No.1 receiver heading into the first pre-season game on Thursday, against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi Stadium. Gallup will have to showcase his raw talent throughout the four pre-season games to keep his hope of starting receiver alive. The physicality and competition is heating up between the receivers on the depth chart.
At the “Blue White Scrimmage” yesterday, Executive Vice President and CEO Stephen Jones, was asked about the players that have stuck out in his mind throughout the off-season and camp; his answer in the receiver category was Michael Gallup. Jones said Gallup is “intriguing” and the great possibility he posses to make a real impact on the field this season in the Cowboys’ offensive scheme.
It has been hard for quarterback Dak Prescott to develop connections with the receiver group, because there are so many new faces and he is still learning their individual speed and tendencies. Prescott has over thrown a few throughout camp, but he seems to always have chemistry with Gallup on key plays. Big things are in store for No. 13. He is the receiver to watch in pre-season!
