DALLAS, Texas — Back home for week two. SMU’s home opener Friday, Sept. 7, against in the Battle for the IronĀ Skillet at Gerald J. ford stadium. The Mustangs have won their last two home openers either victories over Stephen F. Austin (2017) and North Texas (2016).
SMU and TCU will meet for the 98th time, the most for SMU against any opponent. TCU leads the series 50-40-7.Ā The non-conference match up is the sixth longest active pairing in the country.Ā
West busted through the line for a 51-yard touchdown to cap off a five play, 75-yard drive that lasted 1:50. The Mustang defense forced a punt on the Horned Frogs first possession. TCU’s punter dropped the snap and the ball bounced its way out of the end zone for a safety with 5:00 left in the first quarter. TCU takes over with aĀ 78-yard touchdown on punt with 12:34 left in the first half.Ā
TCU recovered its own fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. Horned Frogs lead the first half 14-12.Ā
Going in the second half Shaine Hailey took off for his first career interception. TCU extended its lead to 21-12 after a recovered Mustang fumble. TCU Defense locked down all allowed SMU only 58 yards and 3 points with 13:00 left in the second half.Ā
SMU lost the Battle of the Iron Skillet. The mustangs came out in the first half with a long scoring drive but couldn’t get around those holding penalties. Head coach Sonny Dykes said, “TCU is a really good football team but we just have to do better in the second half, we have to move the ball better.”
