FRISCO, Texas – At the outset of the 2018 season, new defensive backs coach Kris Richard moved Cowboys’ veteran Byron Jones from safety to cornerback. Prior to his first round selection in the 2015 draft, he played two years at safety and two years at corner during his college career at Connecticut. He had experience starting at both positions and has made a smooth transition to corner at the pro-level.
He has made a strong impact in the defensive backfield at corner putting pressure on receivers on man-to-man press coverage and preventing catches. Against the Giants, Jones was targeted five times and only allowed one catch for 0 yards. So far this season he is the second ranked corner in the league by Pro Football Focus and has recorded 11 tackles.
Jason Garrett commented on Jones’ ability at corner “ Byron is an outstanding person and embraces any challenge we give him. We anticipate him staying there (corner) for a while…he is quick, fast, explosive, and he is long. “
Dallas is thinner at the safety position with the loss of Xavier Woods to a hamstring injury, but Richard’s move of Jones has proved to be the right call and his hands-on coaching approach and vocalness on the sidelines is firing up the secondary!
