FRISCO, Texas — Texas- The Dallas Cowboys announced Thursday they have acquired defensive end, Robert Quinn, from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 2020 sixth-round pick. The two-time Pro Bowler signed a one-year deal worth $8 million in base salary for 2019.
The 28-year-old is a solid rotational lineman and effective pass rusher that will boost the team’s 4-3 defensive front. He is a dynamic player that can create penetration on opposing offensive lines at the interior and can seal the edge. With DeMarcus Lawrence’s long-term contract still under negotiation and the possibility of him not signing the tender if his desires are not met before the July 15th deadline, Quinn adds depth as a power edge rusher. Quinn’s acquisition comes at a much-needed time for the club with the loss of David Irving and Randy Gregory to suspensions.
He was drafted in the first round with the 14th pick overall by the St. Louis Rams in the 2011 NFL Draft. Quinn spent five seasons in St. Louis with the Rams (2011-2015), two in Los Angeles with the Rams (2016-2017), before he was traded to the Miami Dolphins in 2018. The eight-year veteran tallied 256 combined tackles, 69.0 sacks, 17 passes defensed, 123 quarterback hits, and 23 forced fumbles in 111 total games played over the course of his career.
Quinn had a career high in 2013 with 57 combined tackles and 19 sacks when the Rams ran a 4-3 alignment under defensive coordinator Tim Walton and head coach Jeff Fisher. His numbers dropped in 2017 when Wade Phillips took over as DC, running a 3-4 scheme and he went to Miami. Now Quinn will benefit from Dallas’ traditional 4-3 defensive front.
