FRISCO, Texas – During week three of Dallas Cowboys’ OTA’s at the Star in Frisco, rookie wide receiver Reggie Davis impressed at practice. His progression under Sanjay Lal’s leadership was noticeable on the field Wednesday.
I spoke with Davis on his new positional coach and he gleamed as he remarked, “ He doesn’t coach everybody the same. He will not make you be a robot; he will let you do you. You basically put his coaching into your game and make you a player, instead of being robotic and everybody doing things the same. “
Lal is the type of coach that bases formations and routes around the individual talent of his receivers, vs. trying to fit players into his set formation. That style of coaching is apparently working very well for the free agent out of Georgia. He scored a touchdown during practice and had several catches deep downfield with an open shot to the end zone. Along with Amari Cooper, Davis will be another wide-out and additional depth the team can use to diversify the offense.
Davis signed with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent in 2017 and he also spent time with the Cleveland Browns (2017) and division rival Philadelphia Eagles (2018), before landing in Dallas. Now, there is a new No.11 in town.
During his four-year college career at Georgia, Davis amassed 38 receptions for 618 yards, a 16.3 average after the catch, and two touchdowns. He is a versatile player who also spent time on special teams as a kick/punt returner. As a kick returner he tallied 47 returns for 998 yards, and a 21.2 average after the catch. As a punt returner, he recorded 34 returns for 251 yards, a 7.4 average after the catch, and a touchdown.
