FRISCO, Texas – Dak Prescott is entering his fourth season with the Dallas Cowboys and midway through June his contract has not been finalized. He is the leader of the team and the fact that Dallas has yet to negotiate a long-term deal with the face of the franchise, does not set a good foundation for the rest of the squad. Prescott needs to be the top priority and he has rightfully earned it, reaching new heights last season.
In 2018, Prescott led the team to its third consecutive winning season with a 10-6 record, the NFC East crown, and a victory over the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Wild Card Game. He recorded 3,885 yards on 356-526 passing (all career bests) and 22 touchdowns, making him the first quarterback in franchise history to pass for at least 3,000 yards and 20 TD’s in each of his first three seasons. In addition, he rushed 75 times-the most by a Cowboys’ QB –for 305 yards and six scores. He also established a new NFL record for the most game-winning drives in a quarterback’s first three seasons (14). Given the numbers he posted, Dak was named to his second Pro Bowl as an injury replacement for Drew Brees.
There is no doubt that he is the future of the Cowboys’ offense with his clutch game time moves and his leadership qualities on and off the field.
Jon Kitna, Dak’s new QB coach, remarked on what differentiates him from the rest, “He is a rare individual; from a physical standpoint, from a mental standpoint, an experience standpoint, and a leadership standpoint. I mean, on down the line. Playing in Dallas and all that comes with being the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, he embraces all that. He does not shy away from it. I don’t want to put limits on what that could mean. It will be fun overtime to watch it happen and to be apart of it on a small scale. “
Kitna, who was the primary back-up to Tony Romo and Kyle Orton, knows full well the pressure that comes with being the quarterback for America’s Team: the most well known sports franchise in the world. He lived it and sees from a unique perspective the way Dak carries himself and blocks out the noise. Prescott does not let the criticism get to him, but thrives under it. He has continued to beat the odds since his rookie season, where he let the team to 13-3 and gained the starting QB role from Tony Romo.
Like everything else, he is not concerned with his contract negotiation and has made it abundantly clear that he wants to be a Dallas Cowboy for life-his childhood favorite team. As both sides continue to make offers on the contract, Dak has put his focus elsewhere.
Dak will be hosting his third annual youth football camp open to boys and girls in grades 1-8. The Citi Dak Prescott Football ProCamp will take place June 22 and 23 at Northwest High School in Justin, Texas from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This will be the first camp located in Texas; the prior camps were located in Louisiana, where Prescott grew up. There will still be a camp at Haughton High School is Louisiana where Dak made his debut as a player, but fans are excited to finally have one in North Texas. Instead of dwelling on the contract that has not happened, he is focusing on what he can control-impacting the lives of young adults through a day packed with X’s and O’s, along with life lessons he has absorbed throughout his journey!
