OXNARD, California — To add depth at tight end and within the offensive line, the Dallas Cowboys waived injured wide receiver Lance Lenoir and offensive tackle Derrick Puni.
The club signed offensive tackle Juwann Bushell-Beatty on Wednesday, along with tight end Marcus Lucas.
With Zack Martin out with an irritation on a back disc, combined with Connor McGovern’s pectoral injury and Cody Wichman’s lower left leg injury, Dallas needed additional help in their o-line.
Bushell-Beatty started 10 games as a sophomore, once at left tackle. His junior year, the former Michigan Wolverine played 12 games, the final seven at right tackle. In 2018, the honorable mention All-Big Ten selection started 11 games at right tackle.
The Washington Redskins picked him up as an undrafted free agent following the 2019 NFL Draft. He was cut and now has an opportunity with the team’s main rival: the Dallas Cowboys.
The Cowboys only had three tight ends on the depth chart following the release of Rico Gathers: Jason Witten, Blake Jarwin, and Dalton Schultz. The club picked up Lucas as insurance.
He signed with the Carolina Panthers out of Missouri as an undrafted free agent following the 2014 NFL Draft. Lucas spent his rookie season on the Panther’s practice squad. He returned on a future/reserve contract, but was waived by the Panthers at the beginning of the 2015 season.
Lucas also spent time with the Dolphins and Bears prior to signing on to the Seattle Seahawk’s practice squad in 2016. Seattle signed him to a futures deal, but cut him from injured reserve before the start of the regular season. He then spent stints with the Colts, Raiders, and Lions before returning to the Seahawk’s practice squad in 2018. He was again waived and was picked up by the 49ers. Lucas was cut back in May by San Francisco. He has never appeared in an NFL game and now has a chance to show Dallas what he’s got.
