FRISCO, Texas- As the Dallas Cowboys head into preseason week four against the Tampa Bay on Thursday, a player who has gradually progressed throughout the offseason with his impactful plays is linebacker, Justin Phillips. He is certainly putting in the production level on the field to earn a spot on the team’s final 53-man roster.
With Sean Lee, Leighton Vander Esch, and Jaylon Smith, the Cowboys’ arguably have the best linebacker trio in the league. The three playmakers will take the field in a 4-3 scheme, but the backup depth behind them is up for grabs; A chance for an undrafted free agent like Phillips, to take the spot.
Dallas signed the former Oklahoma State LB following the 2019 NFL Draft. Since then, he has put himself into contention for a spot on America’s Team.
Ten-year veteran Sean Lee agrees. I spoke with him on Phillips’ improvement and he admiringly remarked, “ His [progression] has been incredible. For a young guy to pick it up like he has and to make the plays he has; that play was an all-timer-Being able to read the route and go up and take the ball away from the tight end. He had a pick in one of his first practices, which was an unbelievable play and he had a pick in one-on-one’s yesterday, so the guy has playmaking ability. “
Phillips is currently tied for seventh in the NFL with 12 tackles in 2019, and he is one-of-three players to record at least ten tackles and one interception in the preseason. His work ethic is off the charts and he has great instincts in pass coverage.
“ I feel like I am getting there slowly, surely, “ Phillips told me. “I am not there yet all the way, but I am just taking the coaching everyday and I go out there and do my best.
