DALLAS, Texas — Fall camp is now in full swing on the Hilltop as the Mustangs prepare for this upcoming season. One player that has already caught many eyes is senior running back Xavier Jones. Coming into this season, Jones is already on the Athlon Sports Preseason watch list. When asked what to improve this year, he mentioned how the younger guys came into this camp as very impressive and they are ready to become more consistent as a team.
“I haven’t really set any goals for myself. I just want to go out with a bang, win a lot of games, compete for a conference championship and I feel like everything else will take care of itself,” stated Jones.
For the 2018 season, Jones registered 69 carries for 311 yards and two touchdowns. Jones believes it all starts with bringing 100% effort to practice and that will follow the team to the field during games. With no days off so far with fall camp, Jones sees the consistent that each of the players are bringing to practice. This compares to last season where the Mustangs had a young offensive line and had a few struggles with not all the players being healthy up front.
“I think Hayden Howerton will stand out this year. He has been a leader since he has been here. He has switched roles so now he is playing guard…even Cobe Bryant, he is a new transfer in and he is catching on to the offensive and he is going to be impressive,” stated Jones when asked which players will stand out this season.
Jones was able to give us an inside look with the freshmen class and how they are shaping up for this season, “I like the freshmen on both sides. They were two steps ahead when they first came in. They are catching on real fast, especially our two receivers Calvin and Rashee. They have been flashing a lot and catching on to the offensive and our two running backs are also competitors. They are both tough, fast and they listen, so I get to coach those guys up and get to be a big brother for them and set the foundation for them when it is their times.”
Catch Xavier Jones and the rest of the Mustangs as they take on Arkansas State August 31 and North Texas on September 7 for the home opener.
