DALLAS, Texas — After a huge win against Arkansas State, 37-30, SMU Football is gearing up for their home opener against UNT this Saturday.
A play everyone is still talking about is the 98-yard punt return by CJ Sanders, which landed him the American Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.
“CJ has definitely earned it. The kick off return was a big play in the game for us…you can go back and look at his history at Notre Dame, and he has been really successful at returning kicks and punts. He’s really just getting started,” said Head Coach Sonny Dykes before Monday’s night ‘Always Sonny on the Hilltop’radio show.
Also in attendance of the radio show was Senior Safety Rodney Clemons. When asked about the season opener, Clemons said, “We are happy about the win, but you can’t think too much on that. Win or L, we can’t think too much about last week. North Texas is a big rivalry and they beat us last year, so we have to come out the next few days and practice hard,” said Clemons.
After Saturday’s win, Dykes fulfilled his promise to the team by doing a little dance in the locker room. Yet, Dykes said if they pull out a win against UNT this week, don’t expect another dance move from him.
The Mustangs face off against North Texas this Saturday at Ford Stadium. Kick off is at 6 p.m. and fans are encouraged to wear white clothing attire.
