Cowboys Release Taco Charlton

FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys cut Taco Charlton to make room on the 53-man roster for Robert Quinn.

Charlton, the former 2017 first-round pick never met expectations in Dallas. In 27 games (seven starts), he tallied four sacks, 11 quarterback hits, 46 tackles, and two passes defensed.

He missed multiple games in 2018 and when he was physically able to return to the field, he was benched due to reasons regarding attitude. The relationship between him and the coaching staff was severed and never mended following the decision. He was again injured and during the offseason he underwent two surgeries, one on his shoulder and the other on his ankle.

Coming into the regular season with the addition of Robert Quinn from and fifth-round pick Joe Jackson with a spot on the 46-man game day roster, it was evident that the Cowboys were not going to sit around and pray for Charlton’s maturity. His fate was sealed.

Charlton has been very vocal about his lack of playing time and wanting more of a pronounced role on the team. There were talks of an exchange in trading Charlton prior to the start of the regular season, but nothing materialized with other teams around the league. The frustration only grew from there.

Taco took to social media to demand a release from the team and his wish has now been granted. He is a free man with a new start. An unfortunate situation for the Cowboys but the right call.
