No. 24 Mustangs Host Tulsa

DALLAS, Texas — For the first time since 1986 SMU football has made its way into the AP top 25, landing at No. 24 this week. The Mustangs (5-0, 1-0 American) welcome in Tulsa (2-2, 0-0 American) to Dallas on Saturday evening as they look to continue its perfect season and remain ranked.

SMU has already tied its win total from last season and still have 7 weeks to go in the regular season. Last year SMU faced Tulsa in the final game of the season, coming in with 5 wins and needing one more to become bowl eligible.

The Mustangs lost 27-24 and didn’t make post season play. In year 2 for head coach Sonny Dykes you can already see the improvements. One of the main reasons for the unblemished start to this season is transfer quarterback Shane Buechele. He is averaging 277 yards per game and already thrown 10 touchdown passes. He is leading SMU’s offense to 44.4 points per game. But it’s not just Buechele who is new to the team. The Mustangs roster looks drastically different with a total of 65 new players from last season.

In this weekend’s game, one of the biggest threats will be junior running back Shamari Brooks for Tulsa. In the past 3 games he has averaged 104.7 yards and run for four touchdowns. If the Mustangs can slow him down and put points up on the board like they have done all season, their perfect record should remain for another week. Game time is set for 6:30pm on Saturday at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas.
