FRISCO, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys have parted ways with kicker, Brett Maher. The Cowboys had their annual holiday hospital visits on Monday and Maher spent the morning with patients seeking treatment at a local children’s hospital. He got on the bus with teammates and when he arrived back at the Star, Maher was cut. Obviously, not handled in the best fashion.
The team signed veteran free agent Kai Forbath after Maher’s struggles continued on the field. I am told Forbath was the most consistent of the tryouts. Maher missed a 42-yarder against the Chicago Bears and missed two attempts the game before vs. the Buffalo Bills on Thanksgiving. In 2019, Maher’s field goal percentage was 66.7 % and he was 1-5 on kicks between 40 and 49 yards. In addition, he was 4-8 on kicks over 50 yards.
Maher’s consistency fluctuated over the past two seasons following the departure of longtime kicker, Dan Bailey. Forbath will finish out the 2019 season for Dallas. He was the active kicker for New England in one game as a replacement for injured Stephen Gostkowski. He was then cut from the Patriots who signed Nick Folk.
Forbath joins the 6-7 Cowboys who will try to keep their lead in the NFC East and playoff hopes alive with a win at AT&T Stadium on Sunday against the Rams.
