SMU Host Wichita State

DALLAS, TEXAS — SMU Men’s Basketball team starts their last week of regular season hosting Wichita State. The American Athletic Conference match up will be the Mustangs last home game of what’s been a good year so far. The Mustangs came into the season with low expectations and no seniors, and headed into March they boast a (19-8) overall record, with several impressive wins on their resume.

SMU comes off a big win, beating Memphis 58-53 on Tuesday night in Dallas. That game extended the Mustangs home win streak to 9 games, so they will be going for a double digit win streak tonight in Moody Coliseum. SMU head coach, Tim Jankovich was extremely proud of his teams’ defensive effort in their win over Memphis, and said they will need to have another great defensive game to beat Wichita State.

The Wichita State Shockers come to Dallas (21-7) overall, tied with SMU in the AAC. The Shockers come off a back and forth game with Temple on Thursday night, trailing at halftime, before making a comeback and winning by 3. The Shockers are lead by head coach, Gregg Marshall.

Headed into March, the Mustangs are (9-6) in AAC play, with 3 more regular season games. After tonight’s game the Mustangs head to Florida for UCF on Wednesday and USF on Saturday. SMU ranks 4th in the AAC, 1 spot ahead of Wichita State. Both teams are well out of 3rd, but could earn a 1st round bye in the conference tournament. The tournament will be at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, March 12-15, and selections will be made after the final conference games.

Today’s matchup also has high implications outside the conference, with both teams battling for a spot in NCAA tournament. The Mustangs have an outstanding (15-1) home record to carry them into their final home game of the season. Tip off will be at 3 pm CT. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
