FRISCO, Texas — NFL players voted to approve the proposed 2020 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
The NFLPA released a statement on the agreement, “ NFL players have voted to approve ratification of a new collective bargaining agreement by a vote tally of 1,019 to 959. This result comes after a long and democratic process in accordance with our constitution. An independent auditor received submitted ballots through secure electronic platform, then verified, tallied and certified the results.”
According to multiple reports, the new salary cap in 2020 will be $198.2 million, as opposed to $188.2 last year. The new CBA will provide more benefits to players, team’s to use one tag, a 17-game regular season, an additional Wild Card game, and a more equalized amount of money shared between players. In the NFL last year, 65% of players made a minimum salary and minimum salaries will increase as the new CBA goes into effect. Minimums will be raised to surpass $700k and players are guaranteed 48% of revenue.
Under the new CBA, teams can no longer use both the franchise and transition tag. The Cowboys will have to move quickly with negotiations to lock up Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper, players that have been reported “priorities” for the organization. Dallas can now only tag one, not both.
The franchise tag is expected to be used on Prescott but Dallas needs to pay their leader. He made significant strides in 2019 under Kellen Moore’s scheme. Dak was more comfortable in the pocket releasing the ball quicker and outside the pocket on deep throws. He did a better job reacting to defensive coverages and getting the ball to isolated receivers. More than just Dak’s production on the field is the importance of his leadership qualities. The players in the Cowboys’ locker-room go into battle week-in and week-out for Dak. They would go through a brick wall for him and consistently talk about the impeccable way he carries himself. He is the heart of the team, sets the tone, and deserves to be given a long-term deal.
