FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys signed kicker Greg Zuerlein to a three-year deal with a base value of $7.5 million on Friday per Mike Garafolo.
The Rams drafted “Greg The Leg” Zuerlein with the first pick of the sixth round in the 2012 NFL Draft. He has been a reliable long-distance kicker that consistently makes kicks from 50 plus yards. Zuerlein has connected on 82% of 245 field-goal attempts throughout his career. He has made 60% of his 50-plus yard attempts for his career and nailed at least one 50-plus yard FG attempt in each season.
He had a down year in 2019 with the Rams. He converted 24 of his 33 field goal attempts for a 72.7% success rate- a drastic difference from 87.1% in 2018 and 95% in 2017. However, he did not miss one of his extra-point attempts (42).
Dallas now has two kickers after re-signing Kai Forbath to a one-year deal earlier this month. Forbath was 10-of-10 in his 2019 stint with the Cowboys after Maher was released. Zuerlein will reunite with his former Rams’ special teams coach John Fassel, who now fills the role in Dallas. Given the longer contract and his history with Fassel, Zuerlein likely has a leg up on the competition! Yes, pun intended.
