FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys signed free agent cornerback Saivion Smith. Smith will provide additional depth at the position and will compete for a spot on the roster at Training Camp.
He attended LSU before finishing out his collegiate career at Alabama. In 2018, Smith amassed three interceptions, 60 tackles, and five pass breakups. He entered the 2019 NFL Draft after his junior season with the Crimson Tide and went undrafted. Smith signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars but was cut prior to the start of the season. He has never played in an NFL game.
Saivion played in the XFL for the Houston Roughnecks during its inaugural season. Smith will in no way be a replacement for the Cowboys’ former No.1 corner Byron Jones or stop the club from drafting a CB, but he has the size (6’1, 200 pounds) to make an impact in the rotation during offseason workouts. He will join Chidobe Awuzie, Jourdan Lewis, Anthony Brown, Maurice Canady, and CJ Goodwin in Dallas’ cornerback group.
