FRISCO, TEXAS — The Dallas Cowboys added backup depth at the quarterback position with the 231st pick in the seventh round of the Draft by selecting Ben DiNucci. He will compete for the backup role behind Dak Prescott and will become a pupil for Mike McCarthy to develop.
DiNucci transferred from Pittsburgh and started 29 games for James Madison with a 23-6 record. In 2019, he threw for 3,441 yards and 29 touchdowns resulting in him becoming a first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association pick. DiNucci’s 70.6 completion percentage led the nation.
McCarthy’s brother was actually DiNucci’s eighth grade basketball coach and he told the media “ Crazy it has come full circle.” He is elated to work with the man that developed Aaron Rodgers and has a long track record of producing growth in QB’s and enhancing skills.
Following the conclusion of the NFL Draft, McCarthy gave a short overview of each selection and described Ben as “very accurate.” He added, “He reminds me of Marc Bulger. Excellent addition to the quarterback room.”
He joins the Cowboys’ current No.2 QB Cooper Rush.
