DALLAS, TEXAS — As SMU student athletes began returning to campus this week, it was likely there would be some COVID-19 cases. Universities across the US have recently begun bringing people back on campus, and many are having to deal with positive cases. The school announced on Wednesday that five of the 75 athletes who returned tested positive for coronavirus. They did not specify which sport they are from, but did say all cases are currently asymptomatic. The school is now working on contact tracing while all five students are moved into isolation for two weeks. The athletes will be monitored daily by telehealth appointments while in quarantine. They will also be receiving food by contactless delivery services while working on their online classes.
The athletes who returned to campus this week were the first of a three-phase plan that the university and athletic department put together. Upon arriving, all staff, coaches and athletes received two COVID-19 tests. First, they were tested to see if they currently have the virus. Second, they received an antibody test which determines whether they previously have had it or been in contact with the disease. In addition, before entering the facilities, everyone will be screened daily with a temperature check and has to fill out a health questionnaire.
If the 2020 college football season begins as planned, SMU will open its season at Texas State in San Marcos on September 5th.
