FRISCO, TX — Following a completely virtual offseason due to the coronavirus pandemic, one of the biggest roster questions for the Dallas Cowboys as Training Camp looms is who will start at center?
The team’s longstanding veteran Travis Frederick retired following the 2019 season due to health reasons and he leaves a void that has to be filled in the interior of Dallas’ offensive line. Frederick was a premiere cornerstone in the Cowboys’ O-line throughout his career and the five-time pro bowl vet will be tough to replace.
With the current climate in the NFL and a traditional offseason program that was eliminated, there is a strong case for veteran Joe Looney. His eight-year experience in the league gives him a leg up in the competition. Looney started in all 16 games in 2018 for Frederick, after Travis’ diagnosis with Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Both Connor McGovern and Tyler Biadasz have talent, but neither has played a snap at the pro level. The Cowboys coaching staff were all in on Biadasz in the draft and traded with division rival Eagles to move up and snag the Wisconsin center, but because of limited workouts, they have not been able to see the virtual film study translate on the field. At this point, it is hard to bet against Looney.
In discussing his post-surgery health and competing for a starting job, Biadasz told local Dallas media, “ I’m good to go and I’m really focusing on where do I fit and what piece I am to this puzzle of this whole team. I am going out and competing at my best and you know, putting my best foot forward for this team.”
Like many players, Biadasz is itching to get to work!
