FRISCO, TX — The Dallas Cowboys released kicker Kai Forbath on Saturday.
Forbath was signed by Dallas in December and was their kicker for the final three games of the 2019 season in which he went 10-for-10. He was one of two kickers on the roster heading into training camp along with Greg Zuerlein. The Cowboys signed Zuerlein to a three-year deal worth $7.5 million in March and now he is the obvious starter with Forbath’s release.
Zuerlein played for new Cowboys’ special teams coordinator John Fassel during his tenure with the Rams. Dallas could not have asked for better production from Forbath late last season but due to the current climate in the NFL with COVID-19 and an agreement between the league and the NFLPA, teams have to trim their rosters from 90 to 80 players by Aug. 16. Cutting Kai and narrowing the roster down helped the Cowboys reach the desired 80 count.
In addition on Saturday, the Cowboys waived long snapper Joe Fortunato, waived linebacker Azur Kamara, and placed cornerback Saivion Smith on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
