FRISCO, TX — During the nation’s current COVID-19 crisis, players were given the option to opt-out of the 2020 NFL season in two categories: voluntary and high-risk. Cowboys’ fullback Jamize Olawale becomes the third player to opt-out, joining cornerback Maurice Canady and undrafted rookie receiver Stephen Guidry. Olawale was placed on the reserve/opt-out list and he will receive a $150,000 stipend for 2020.
Olawale has been the team’s starting fullback the last two seasons and Dallas gave him a three-year contract extension in March worth $5.4 million. He did not play many snaps at fullback and was primarily used as a contributor on special teams.
Time will tell what the Cowboys choose to do with the fullback position. New head coach Mike McCarthy has been in favor of the lead-blocking role in the past in Green Bay but Olawale is no longer an option. The Cowboys did pick up undrafted rookie FB Sewo Olonilua but with an offseason program that was predominately eliminated, he will have a lot to showcase once training camp begins to earn a roster spot.
