Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy Addresses Racial Inequality

FRISCO, TX — In recent months, the coronavirus pandemic is not the only thing impacting sports and the world: racial inequality has been at the forefront of discussion and for Cowboys’ head coach Mike McCarthy it is no different.

McCarthy held a virtual press conference with DFW media on Friday to discuss on-and-off the field topics prior to the start of training camp. One of the most prevalent topics regarding off the field matters, was the conversation on social injustice and the steps the Cowboys’ organization has taken to address its stance on the issue.

Since the death of George Floyd in June by the hands of those sworn to protect, nationwide protests over systemic racism sparked in America and athletes have used their voices/platforms to support the Black Lives Matter movement and community outreach programs to initiate police reform.

McCarthy spoke out on the ongoing conversation and how the current climate in the world has caused him to reflect inwardly and focus on the importance of listening.

“ I think as far as social injustice or whether it’s the national anthem, whether it’s COVID-19, these are everyday type focuses for us. I think we are all touched by everything that is going on personally. I know for me personally, it has made me take a hard look at the blind spots that I may have in my life and from my experiences. The one thing I do know and is something that will be continued to echo to everybody involved in football operations is to take a step back and listen. I think we all need to listen more. You know, how can we really be part of the progress. “

The Cowboys’ organization released a video in June promoting deep conversations and intentionally listening to other perspectives as ways to enact change and combat racial injustice in society. McCarthy endorsed the team’s message by agreeing that the statement “ protests to progress” was “right on the money.”

When asked about the organization’s policy on the national anthem protests, McCarthy responded that the coaching staff would in every way listen and “support the players.”
