Joe Looney Takes First-Team Snaps at Center

FRISCO, TX — Training camp is fast approaching and the Dallas Cowboys have many position battles to look at following an entirely virtual offseason program. The most obvious competition spots are within the offensive line at center and left guard.

On Wednesday during the team’s opening press conference, Mike McCarthy touched on the O-line. He said the goal is to “have a starting five” practicing together “as much as possible to get them locked down” but camp will be the determining factor. The coaching staff has seen little to no practice reps from players in recent months amidst the COVID-19 pandemic to make a clear distinction of where players are at mentally/physically in order to build a depth chart.

At this time, players that have veteran experience are at an advantage. According to McCarthy, Joe Looney has been taking snaps at center with the first team and will be heading into camp. In addition, he noted the expectation is to have Connor Williams at left guard but he will not be a full-go to begin camp. Williams is coming off a knee injury and he will gradually be worked in. Early on in practices, Connor McGovern will get work in at left guard.

The Cowboys have depth at every position and McCarthy made it abundantly clear that there will be “battles at every position” and he is “looking forward to all of them.”
