FRISCO, TEXAS — Cowboys’ defensive tackle Trysten Hill did not meet expectations in his rookie year last season but he has shown maturation and is turning the heads of coaches during training camp, including Mike McCarthy.
“ Trysten, I really like what he’s done, since really the virtual meetings, “ McCarthy noted to the media via a virtual press conference. “ He was always looking for extra work, asks a lot of questions, I’ve been very impressed. Only in pads one day, but I think he’s off to a good start in training camp.”
Hill was a pet project of sorts for former defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli during the draft process but his maturity issues followed him from the University of Central Florida to the pro level. His lack of professionalism resulted in former head coach Jason Garrett sending Hill home after showing up late to a meeting. He did not see much playing time due to his issues. Hill registered five tackles and zero sacks in 121 defensive snaps as a rookie.
Now, with the season-ending injury to Gerald McCoy, Hill has been granted the opportunity to start in the interior. Hopefully he seizes the opportunity before him. Many players are rooting for the second-year player, including veteran Tyrone Crawford who praised Hill to the media.
“ Trigger, Trey, man. That guy is an animal. A lot of last year was just him growing up and growing into a pro. Now, with this offseason work and his mindset and mentality coming into this thing, I’ve seen him become a pro right before my eyes. We’ve had a lot of good conversations so far over many meals, and I can see it in him. He’s focused, he’s hungry, and he wants it. He’s got some good opportunities ahead of him, and I just hope he takes advantage of them. I love my young guys and I want to see them do the best they can do.”
Hill will compete with Neville Gallimore to fill the hole at 3-technique, next to nose tackle Dontari Poe. Crawford has the versatility to play inside as well and will get reps in the interior.
The UCF product faced a lot of criticism last year for his lack of production but if he takes advantage, will have an expanded role on the Cowboys’ defensive line.
