FRISCO, TEXAS — On Wednesday, head coach Mike McCarthy gave several player practice updates. He noted that after missing week two’s matchup against the Falcons, left tackle Tyron Smith (neck) would be working with the rehab group and would not participate in team drills.
The staff seems positive that he will play against Seattle in week three. The goal was to look at the long-term health of Smith in choosing to sideline him against Atlanta.
“ He didn’t play last week in preparation so that he could have a better chance of playing this week or in the future, “ owner and general manger Jerry Jones remarked on local radio show 105.3 The Fan.
“ Nobody knows right now until we get out there and see how he’s operating during the week here at practice. But for the longer term, I feel good about it. He’s had these periods over the last few years when he’s had to adjust and literally on a week-by-week basis as to what he’s doing with some nerves, called stingers. Those are the kind of things he’s dealing with. “
With Smith sidelined and La’el Collins (hip) on inured reserve, Brandon Knight and Terence Steele were the starting tackles against the Falcons. Tight end’s Dalton Schultz and Blake Bell were used as in-line blockers to assist with pass protection as well.
In addition, McCarthy described that cornerback Chidobe Awuzie (hamstring) has a “multiple week” injury and that defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence would not be at Wednesday’s practice due to a “good personal matter.”
In regards to the corner position with Chido’s absence and who will likely fill the vacancy, McCarthy stated, “ I’m not really going to get into who’s playing where. Obviously with the number of changes we’ve had week-to-week, we’re going to work different combinations. And then when we get to the end, we’ll decide exactly how they’re going to line up. We have different personnel groups. “
