FRISCO, Texas- Sitting at a 2-5 record there are bound to be some personnel changes. The Dallas Cowboys started the process on Tuesday afternoon trading defensive end Everson Griffen to the Detroit Lions for a conditional 2021 sixth-round draft pick, according to multiple reports.

Griffen accumulated 2 1/2 sacks, 14 quarterback pressures, and 21 tackles in seven games for the Cowboys this season. He signed a one-year deal back in August worth up to $6 million and a $3 million base salary and just a little over two months later, Dallas has released the veteran edge rusher. Ironically, he recorded his first full sack since week two on Sunday against the WFT and was named the team’s defensive captain, which are chosen each week.

Overall, Griffen did not live up to expectations on the gridiron. The Cowboys’ pass rush consisting of Aldon Smith. DeMarcus Lawrence, and Griffen has failed to create consistency in getting to opposing quarterbacks with 13 sacks on the season.

The trade will open up roughly $3 million against the cap and more opportunities on the field for Randy Gregory and rookie Bradlee Anae. Gregory played just six snaps against Washington on Sunday and in his first pass rush rep in the game, he was about a “split-second away” from the 52-yard touchdown play to wide receiver Terry McLaurin from ever happening per defensive coordinator Mike Nolan. Anae has only played six snaps this season and was inactive for the first time at Washington. Griffen’s departure could be an open door for him as well.
