DALLAS, Texas — SMU Men’s Basketball started their 2020 season with a 97-67 win over Sam Houston State. The defending Southland Conference Champions got off to a good start but when the Mustangs started clicking, they controlled the rest of the game.
Sam Houston State led the first 5 minutes of the game with a hot start offensively. Junior guard, Zach Nutall had 7 of the Bearcats first 10 points, requiring a lot of attention from the Mustangs defense.
SMU tied it up by halfway through the first half and never looked back. Junior guard, Kendric Davis got the Mustangs offense moving the ball better and scored 16 first half points, helping SMU take a 42-27 lead into the break.
By the end of the game, Davis had a career high 33-points, as well as 5 assists and 4 rebounds. Sophomore guard, Charles Smith IV hit some big 3’s and proved to be reliable at the free throw line, finishing his debut with 15-points.
Head Coach, Tim Jankovich said he thought they had several guys had good games individually but he wants to see them play more fluidly and execute better.
SMU continues their non-conference games after Thanksgiving, hosting Texas A&M Corpus Cristi on Monday, November 30th.
