FRISCO, Texas — After the conclusion of a team’s NFL season, each day brings forth new surprises. Thursday morning brought about an interesting turn of events. The Philadelphia Eagles have requested an interview with Cowboys’ offensive coordinator, Kellen Moore for the vacant head coach job.
Many expected Moore to take the head coach job at Boise State, the place where he became one of the winningest quarterbacks in college football history and the most decorated player in the school’s history. The path made sense for Moore’s career trajectory but surprisingly being invariably linked to the position, news broke that Moore would return to the Cowboys on a three-year deal.
Even if coaches are under contract, per league rules, teams have to allow their coaches to interview for positions with other teams for roles that are considered a promotion.
Despite his age, Moore quickly garnered the trust of players and coaches with his young innovative offensive mind. Stats evidenced in 2019 that he had one of the most productive offenses in the league and in 2020, he got the most out of an injury-ravaged roster with creative game plans.
Earlier in the week, it was announced that the Philadelphia Eagles were moving on from Doug Pederson. The only head coach in the franchise’s history to bring the Birds to a Super Bowl victory just three years ago. The news was shocking to say the least given Pederson’s success in Philly and caused many to re-read the team’s statement.
The candidate who lands the job with the Eagles will be tasked with working on Carson Wentz and all the drama that accompanies the quarterback situation. Wentz regressed dramatically in 2020 and rookie Jalen Hurts shined in his debut with the club when he replaced Wentz as the starter.
The fact that at just 32-years-old and beginning his third year as offensive coordinator, that Moore already has NFL head coaching jobs coming his way, speaks volumes to his football mind and bright future ahead.
