FRISCO, TEXAS — Today was an exciting day for FC Dallas, as the 2021 MLS Draft presented by Adidas took place. FC Dallas had the 15th pick in the first round that led them to draft Nicky Hernandez, a midfielder from Southern Methodist University. Although you may think Nickey is new to the professional soccer industry, he’s actually no stranger to the FC Dallas franchise.

Hernandez was formerly on roaster with the North Texas soccer club which is owned by FC Dallas. Hernandez played in nine games with North Texas and scored three goals. Marco Ferruzzi the director of soccer operations stated, “we are very happy we were able to get Nicky when we did. He has a lot to offer and is an extremely powerful player on the field and we felt he was a great first pick for our team.” Ferruzzi also commented saying, “he’s from our backyard and it’s nice we are already familiar and comfortable with him as a player. Our strategy to use him this upcoming season is on a day by day basis, we will continue to watch his growth and we want to put our guys to the test, so if we throw him out on the field and see how he performs, well that will also tell us how ready he is and see how much progress he makes. He will definitely have the opportunity to play this season.”

Hernandez wasn’t the only draft pick FC Dallas was able to snag though. With the 48th pick in the 2nd round, Colin Shutler, a goalkeeper from the University of Virginia was the next pick for FC Dallas. On top of that they drafted three more players in the third round, Thibaut Jacuel 75th pick, Mark Salas 76th pick, and finally Giovanni Montesdeoca with the 79th pick from University of North Carolina. Two of the new rookies, Jacuel and Salas are both defenders and Montesdeoca is a forward.

There is certainly no doubt FC Dallas has an elite new draft class filled with fresh talent and D210SPORTS is ready to see what the 2021 team has in store for them this upcoming season.
