Jason Witten Named Head Coach at Liberty Christian HS

FRISCO, Texas — Longtime Cowboys’ tight end Jason Witten has been named the head football coach of Argyle’s, Liberty Christian.

After one year with the Las Vegas Raiders and an NFL career spanning 17 seasons, Witten announced his retirement last week, for the second time. There has been a longstanding notion that one day Witten would transition from playing to coaching. The time has arrived. The 38-year-old was offered several football coaching opportunities at the NFL and college ranks, but he opted to coach at the high school his children attend. Afterall, football is family.

Liberty Christian announced via Twitter:

“Liberty Christian School is excited to announce our new Head Football Coach Jason Witten. Jason, former Dallas Cowboys’ tight end and longtime Liberty parent will be joining the Liberty Christian coaching staff as Head Football Coach. It’s a great day to be a Warrior!”

Witten will be trading in his cleats for a whistle. He intends to sign a one-day contract with the Cowboys in March when his contract expires with the Raiders to retire as a Cowboy.

He first retired from the game following the 2017 season and spent 2018 as a Monday Night Football analyst on ESPN but came out of retirement in 2019. Witten spent 16 seasons with the Cowboys and one with the Raiders in 2020, where he accumulated 13 catches for 69 yards.

The 2003 third-round pick is the Cowboys’ all-time leader in receptions (1,215), and yards (12,977). He had four 1,000-yard seasons and no tight end in NFL history has started in more games than Witten’s 271. He was named to the Pro Bowl 11 times during his tenure and will one day wear the famed gold jacket for his illustrious career and be immortalized in the Hall of Fame, as well as the Cowboys’ iconic Ring of Honor.

The man that perfected the curl route between the hash marks will now begin his coaching career.
