FRISCO, Texas — The NFL “legal tampering” period has begun prior to the start of free agency on Wednesday afternoon and Cowboys’ swing tackle Cam Erving is apparently the first to part ways with Dallas.
News broke on Monday morning that Erving and the Carolina Panthers were working on a two-year deal worth $10 million, including $8 million guaranteed per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
The former first-round pick joined the Cowboys’ myriad of injuries to the offensive line in 2020. After being limited in training camp, Erving sprained his MCL during the season opener and was placed on IR. He returned for a five-game stint midseason and then suffered another knee sprain during the Thanksgiving Day game ending his season. When it came to the injury pile up on the offensive line, the Cowboys had the worst luck one could imagine. “Dropping like flies” became an actual visual of the team’s front five.
With the loss of Erving for the majority of the year and both starting tackles, Tyron Smith and La’el Collins, Dallas had to rely on the combination of Brandon Knight and Terence Steele. With the young serviceable backup duo and health concerns surrounding Collins and Smith, Dallas will need to add depth at offensive tackle during the offseason.
