FRISCO, Texas — After the loss of Byron Jones last offseason to the Dolphins and Chidobe Awuzie a few days ago to the Bengals in free agency, the Cowboys’ secured their slot corner. Cornerback Jourdan Lewis is returning to the club on a three-year deal worth a maximum of $16.5 million, including $8 million guaranteed, his agency announced via twitter.
In 2020, Lewis started 13 games and compiled 60 tackles, 2.0 sacks, five tackles for loss, two pass deflections, and a fumble recovery. The Cowboys selected Lewis in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft. Over the past four seasons in Dallas, he notched 176 combined tackles, 6.0 sacks, 19 passes defended, and four interceptions in 61 career games.
The slot corner possesses a winning mentality and play-making ability that garnered a contract extension. Lewis may be small in stature but had great ball skills and tackling ability. For now, the Cowboys’ cornerback group includes Trevon Diggs, Anthony Brown, and Lewis (with C.J. Goodwin more of a special teams’ ace). After a lackluster year for the Cowboys’ defensive unit in 2020 under Mike Nolan, the squad is hoping to take monstrous strides forward in 2021 under Dan Quinn.
