FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys have been busy on Thursday addressing their need at defensive tackle. Dallas agreed to terms with Carlos Watkins on a one-year deal and the club wasted no time in securing another defensive lineman. The Cowboys have added seven-year veteran Brent Urban to the mix on a one-year deal, according to his wife Kate Urban via twitter.
Urban played in all 16 games last season for the Chicago Bears (eight starts) and had the third-highest run defense grade (83.7) among interior lineman, per PFF. He compiled 2.5 sacks and 36 tackles in the Bears’ defensive unit that ranked in the top 10 in DVOA. Urban will likely be a rotational depth option for the Cowboys. After the organization’s run defense was demoralized in 2020, Urban will help clog holes at the line of scrimmage.
He spent five seasons with the Baltimore Ravens following his fourth-round selection in the 2015 NFL draft. Urban signed with the Bears during the 2019 season after being released by the Tennessee Titans. This may not be the flash fans were hoping for in free agency, but Urban’s signing is certainly an upgrade. Dan Quinn inherits a defense that hit an all-time low in 2020, with a franchise-worst 473 points allowed and a unit that ranked 31st in run defense. Urban will add some much-needed reinforcement to bolster the interior of the line in Big D.
