FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys have added to their defensive line depth once again on Thursday with the signing of edge rusher, Tarell Basham.
Basham’s contract with the Cowboys is reportedly a two-year deal worth $6.5 million. The former third-round pick is predominately a situational pass rusher in contrast to both the Cowboys’ earlier signings, Carlos Watkins and Brent Urban.
The 27-year-old came off his best season in 2020 with the Jets, racking up three forced fumbles, 36 tackles, five tackles for loss, 13 quarterback hits, and a career-high 3.5 sacks in nine starts. Basham was waived by the Colts and joined the Jets off waivers midway through the 2018 season.
The Ohio product will help boost Dallas’ pass rush. Basham joins a group led by DeMarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory with Dorance Armstrong, Bradlee Anae, and Ron’Dell Carter as depth options competing for snaps. Aldon Smith is an unrestricted free agent with an unknown future in Dallas.
The Cowboys will be returning to a 4-3 base scheme under Dan Quinn and the club has shown their top priority in free agency. A source tells D210Sports the Cowboys are looking to improve size and physicality up front and the club has certainly upgraded with the recent acquisitions.
