FRISCO, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys are adding depth at running back. With Rico Dowdle sidelined for the season with a hip injury and roster cuts on Tuesday, the team is signing veteran running back Corey Clement.
The familiar name in the NFC East now continues his journey in Dallas. Clement signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2017 and made an impact as a pass-catcher in the Eagles’ Super Bowl LII victory against the Patriots, catching four passes for 100 yards. He concluded his career in Philly with 655 rushing yards and 37 receptions for 340 yards.
Clement spent training camp in 2021 with rival, New York Giants. In three preseason games with the Giants, he made an impact in the ground game notching 18 carries for 86 yards (team-high) but was released this week.
With the Cowboys, Clement will replace Dowdle on the depth chart as the backup behind Elliott and Pollard. He has experience as both a runner, receiver and is mostly known for his special team’s prowess. During a four-year span with the Eagles, Clement played 742 special teams snaps. His versatility will elevate the running back room.
A roster move still needs to be made in order to free up a roster spot for Clement. Several players are projected to be allocated to the Reserve/Injured list and Clement will be able to begin practicing as the Cowboys prepare for Tampa Bay.
