FRISCO, Texas – The roster shuffle continues. One day after the league-wide cutdown day, the Dallas Cowboys added depth at quarterback off the waiver wire. Dallas claimed Will Grier off waivers Wednesday morning from the Carolina Panthers, according to multiple reports.
Grier will join Cooper Rush in the team’s competition for the backup role behind Dak Prescott and will be reunited with Doug Nussmeier, the Cowboys’ quarterback coach. Grier spent two seasons (2014-15) under the tutelage of Nussmeier at the University of Florida, who served as the Gators’ offensive coordinator/QBs coach. Grier then transferred to West Virginia after being suspended for PEDs and became a two-year starter, garnering All-Big-12 honors in 2018. He threw 71 touchdown passes, earning him a third-round selection.
The Panthers selected Grier in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft (100th overall), and he made two starts during his rookie year. He was 28-for-52 with 228 yards and threw four interceptions without a touchdown pass.
In Dallas’ roster trim to 53 players, the Cowboys released Garrett Gilbert and waived Ben DiNucci on Tuesday. DiNucci, a seventh-round pick in 2020, has rejoined the team’s practice squad on Wednesday. The Cowboys’ have not announced the move that will open a spot on the roster for Grier. Still a lot of moving parts. Several players are likely to be cleared off the Reserve/COVID-19 list and a few players are dealing with multi-week injuries that will be added to the Reserve/Injured list this week.
