CB Trevon Diggs Named NFC Defensive Player of the Month

FRISCO, Texas – With three interceptions in three games to start the 2021 NFL season, the league has recognized Trevon Diggs’ sensational play.

On Thursday morning, the NFL announced Diggs as its NFC Defensive Player for the Month of September. He becomes the first Cowboys defensive back to win the accolade and only the third player in team history, following in the footsteps of DeMarcus Lawrence (Sept. 2017) and Sean Lee (Sept. 2011, Oct. 2013). Diggs has been targeted 20 times through the first three games and has allowed 10 catches. His 50% coverage rate is tied for eighth among NFL defensive backs, per Pro Football Focus.

In primetime on Monday Night Football, the stage was set for Diggs against the Eagles. He tallied his third interception, a pick-six. In off coverage, Diggs observed Jalen Hurts’ quick read, drove on DeVonta Smith’s out route, and undercut the pass. Diggs returned the interception 59 yards to the end zone to give the Cowboys a 27-7 lead. The Alabama product leads all Cowboys defenders with six pass breakups, three coming against Philadelphia.

His stellar performance through the first three games is even more impressive considering the elite talent he shut down – Mike Evans in Week 1 and Keenan Allen in Week 2. Against Tampa Bay, Diggs limited Evans to 24 yards on three catches.

Dallas currently leads the league in takeaways (8) and turnover differential, a byproduct of Diggs’ success in the secondary. Along with Micah Parsons, Diggs has been a catalyst in the defensive turnaround under Dan Quinn. No. 7 has just scratched the surface.
