TCU Pulls Out a Win Over Nicholls State After Ugly First Half

FORT WORTH, TX – TCU (3-0) pulled out a 63-50 win over Nicholls State (3-2) after trailing by 16.

The Horned Frogs struggled to connect offensively throughout the first half, shooting 27% from the floor and going into halftime with 11 turnovers.

TCU trailed behind the Colonels for most of the game, but slowly found its way back midway through the second half.

“I think in the first half we were rushing a lot,” Jakobe Coles said. “We just came into the locker room, regrouped and told everyone to calm down.”

TCU scoring leader, Mike Miles, completed the first half with 3 points, 0 assists and 6 turnovers but stepped up when his teammates needed him most with 13 points, 2 assists and 2 turnovers in the second half.

“I trust [Miles] a lot,” Coles said. “He was struggling in the first half, but us, as a team, need to help him move more to get him better shots and better opportunities.”

The Frogs did not let the first half defeat them as a drastic change in momentum during halftime led the Frogs to a win.

“I think we showed a lot of maturity with that,” Micah Peavy said. “I don’t think we put our heads down at all. We just came together.”

Head Coach Jamie Dixon said the guys worked hard and met all of their goals this game, except for turnovers.

Of the 15 turnovers given by the Frogs, eight were from Miles. A career-high for the sophomore guard.

“We’ve got to cut down on turnovers,” Dixon said. “Our goal is to be 10 or less. Five doesn’t sound like a lot, but it is.”

Despite the tough first half, Mike Miles is confident going into the weekend, but Coach Dixon still sees room for improvement.

“We’ve got to get older from today to Monday,” Dixon said. “We’ve got to get better and that’s what we will do.”

Undefeated TCU will hit the road for the first time this season for the SoCal Challenge. The Frogs will face Santa Clara on Nov. 22 and Pepperdine on Nov. 24.
