FRISCO, Texas – Cowboys’ left tackle Tyron Smith will not play in Week 15 against the New York Giants after re-aggravating a prior left ankle sprain at Washington.
The Cowboys track record with Tyron Smith in recent years regrading injuries has not gone favorably. At least this time, the injury seems to be a short-term case, as opposed to last year’s long-term absence.
In 2020, Smith missed nearly the entirety of the season after undergoing neck surgery, leading to continuity issues in the trenches. Smith missed two games earlier this season with an ankle injury with Terence Steele filling in at left tackle. A Monday evaluation revealed the All-Pro tackle would not be available this week after Connor McGovern rolled onto Smith’s leg in the second half of Sunday’s division matchup.
Owner and general manager Jerry Jones shared a positive outlook on Smith’s timeline.
“The good news about this is we’ll miss him Sunday but we’ll for sure have him as we get into the last part of the season and into the playoffs relative to these injuries he’s dealing with,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan.
Jones confirmed Terence Steele is expected to start at left tackle as Smith’s replacement, but the staff will “see how the week goes.”
In addition, wide receiver Cedrick Wilson is the latest player to be added to the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Wilson tested positive Monday morning and entered protocols.
He returned from an ankle injury last week and played in the team’s Week 14 contest, but his status is once again in question for Sunday’s game at New York, dictated by his symptoms and testing results as the week progresses.
