DALLAS, Texas — The Mustangs are 11-3 overall and 2-0 in American Athletic Conference play. The win makes 8 straight for SMU, 6 non-conference and Tulsa and UCF so far in the AAC.
The Mustangs got off to a slow start in the first half, but when Kendric Davis got hot the Mustangs controlled the rest of the game. SMU had 4 double-digit scorers, led by Davis’, with 20 points. Davis also had 8 assists and 8 rebounds. Michael Weathers ended the day 19-points, and Marcus Weathers and Zach Nutall had 10 points each.
SMU Head Coach, Tim Jankovich attributed his teams’ recent success to the guys’ character. He said they’re unselfish and bought in. Jankovich also mentioned his rosters’ strong depth as the “Best we’ve had for years.”
Statistically, SMU leads the AAC in 3-pointers made and 3-point shooting percentage. Davis leads the conference in scoring, averaging over 20 points per game and free throw percentage. Davis earned pre-season all conference 1st team honors and made several national award watch lists. Against Tulsa, Davis led the Mustangs scoring 26 points.
The Mustangs were picked 3rd in the American pre-season poll. Houston and Memphis are the teams to beat. SMU plays at Cincinnati Thursday evening. Conference play continues through the beginning of March, followed by the AAC Tournament in Fort Worth, March 10th-13th.
