FRISCO, Texas – An MRI confirmed Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Gallup suffered a torn ACL in his left knee on Monday. He will miss the remainder of the season.
Gallup suffered the season-ending injury while catching a touchdown pass in the second quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals and he did not return to the game. On the touchdown catch, Gallup spun around mid-air to haul in the back-shoulder pass from Dak Prescott. He exhibited rare body control on the grab and got his feet inbounds. During the play, his left knee appeared to buckle as he contorted his body.
“You saw his play-making ability,” Amari Cooper commented on Gallup’s touchdown play. “He said that he felt it [ACL] pop before he caught the ball. He’s tough enough to go up and still make the play, and he knew he was hurt. It speaks to how tough MG is, how much of a baller he is. It’s unfortunate that he went down like that. He’ll be alright, and I know he’ll come back better.”
During the 2021 season, Gallup accumulated 35 catches for 445 yards and two touchdowns as the Cowboys’ deep threat and No. 3 receiver alongside Cooper and CeeDee Lamb. He missed seven games this season after suffering a calf injury in Week 1 at Tampa Bay.
The injury raises question marks on Gallup’s future with Dallas. The fourth-year player is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent after the season.
On the injury impacting the team’s decision to re-sign Gallup, Cowboys chief operating officer Stephen Jones told 105.3 “The Fan” in Dallas, “Not at all. We’ve got some challenges that we’ll address in the offseason. No one thinks more of Michael Gallup than the Dallas Cowboys and his teammates. He’s a class act all the way. He’ll come back strong and better than ever.”
In Gallup’s absence, Dallas will look to Cedrick Wilson to fill the third receiver spot, followed by Noah Brown and Malik Turner as depth options. Against the Cardinals, Wilson caught six passes for 35 yards and a touchdown. With his versatility and prior experience at quarterback, he threw a 31-yard pass to Tony Pollard for good measure.
