FRISCO, Texas – The Cowboys added additional depth on Friday afternoon. The club signed free agent running back Ryan Nall, a core special teams player with versatility out of the backfield.
Nall signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent in 2018 out of Oregon State. He was known more for his prowess as a special teams player (577 snaps) in Chicago, as opposed to his impact on offense (95 snaps). Nall registered six rushes for 12 yards and caught nine passes for 71 yards in 33 career games played.
With his big frame (6-2, 240), Nall can grind out yardage on dirty runs through tackles. He can be employed as a fullback or H-back, adding another mismatch weapon for Kellen Moore. The Cowboys are one of the few teams in the NFL with a fullback on the 90-man roster, with the prevalence of pass-centric attacks. Both Nick Ralston and Sewo Olonilua have pushed for playing time occupying the fullback role in Dallas and Connor McGovern has been utilized as a lead blocker in the team’s ‘MAC’ package.
Nall can make an immediate contribution on special teams and will get work with Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard during the offseason program/preseason.
