FRISCO, TX – The Dallas Cowboys had the 24th overall pick in round one of the 2022 NFL Draft and selected the Texas native, Tyler Smith, the left tackle out of Tulsa. Smith started in 13 games in the 2021 season and received Second-Team All-League accolades.
With Connor Williams off to Miami in free-agency it left a huge hole at left guard for the Cowboys. Everyone had a feeling Dallas was going to go with an offensive lineman but we never know exactly what is going to happen until it does.
Smith originally played left tackle at Tulsa but moving him to left guard will allow Dallas to feature his down hill power in the rush attack while reducing exposure in the pass protection to give Prescott more time in the pocket.
Smith’s wide body stance makes him very powerful at the point of attack which will open up running lanes for the running backs.
Smith just turned 21 on April 3rd and is one of the youngest players in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Smith told the Dallas media after his selection, “Being able to come home after all this time and play for America’s team is a dream come true.”
Mike McCarthy said in the post game press conference that he will be playing and getting reps in the left tackle position as well as the left guard position.
Stephen Jones said, “We think he can be our left tackle for a long time. With his ability, we believe that he can really be a top left tackle.”
