FRISCO, TX – The Dallas Cowboys announced after the 2022 NFL Draft concluded on Saturday that they will most likely sign 19 undrafted players in free agency. One that everyone wanted to see the Cowboys grab was a new kicker.
Greg Zuerlein was Dallas’s kicker in 2021 where he started 15 games. He connected on 28-of-34 at 82 percent. He was 5-of-5 (100%) from 20-25 yards out, 15-of-16 (93%) from 30-39 yards out, 6-of-8 (75%) from 40-49 yards out, and 2-of-5 (40%) from 50 yards or more.
With his productivity at 82 percent and going down by the year, Cowboy’s fans think we need a new kicker on the roster. The biggest issue in Zuerlein’s game right now is his efficiency on kicks from 50 yards out or more. The fact that he can only convert on 40 percent of his kicks from 50 yards on beyond is concerning.
After Saturday’s draft, the Cowboys came to terms with Texas Tech Kicker Jonanthon Garibay. Gariaby spent two seasons in Lubbock and Texas Tech where he became one of the best kickers in college football. In his two years at Tech he connected on 23-of-27 and in his final season at Tech he connected on 15-of-16. Garibay was 100 percent from 50 yards or closer.
Garibay is recently known for his Iowa State win when he won the game for Texas Tech with a 62-yard field goal making the score 41-38.
With this grab that gives the Cowboys two kickers on their roster; Garibay and Chris Naggar, who signed a one year deal with Cowboys earlier this year.
These two will battle it out in Oxnard California during training camp for the starting spot.
